Installation and Maintenance of Tungsten Crucible

In crystal growth, vacuum melting, and high-temperature material processing, stress concentration, misalignment, and surface contamination are major causes of early failure. Proper installation and maintenance are essential for structural alignment, thermal cycle control, and surface condition management.

1. Inspection Before Installation
Pre-installation inspection directly affects initial heating stability. CTIA recommends inspecting each tungsten crucible individually before use. Cracks, edge chipping, deformation, and surface contamination must be carefully identified, as even minor defects may propagate into failure sources under high-temperature conditions and affect thermal field stability.

Surface oil, moisture, and particle residues may cause local contamination or electrical discharge in vacuum or inert atmospheres. The tungsten crucible surface must remain clean and dry before installation.
Clearance between equipment and tungsten crucible must be designed according to thermal expansion behavior to avoid jamming or eccentric heating during temperature rise.

2. Installation Process Control
CTIA considers coaxial alignment and stress control as the core of installation. The tungsten crucible must remain precisely aligned with the furnace center to prevent uneven load distribution and localized stress concentration.

Dedicated fixtures or flexible support structures should be used to ensure stable positioning and to avoid micro-crack initiation caused by rigid contact. After installation, low-power idle heating is recommended to gradually establish thermal equilibrium between the crucible and furnace, reducing initial thermal shock.

3. Post-Use Maintenance and Cleaning
Service life is strongly affected by maintenance procedures. The tungsten crucible must be cooled naturally to room temperature before disassembly. Forced cooling should be avoided due to thermal stress risk.

Residues should be removed using a soft cloth or non-metallic tools, and hard scraping must be avoided to prevent damage to the inner surface. For light oxidation or deposits, gentle cleaning methods are recommended. Excessive mechanical treatment may damage the dense surface structure.

4. Storage and Protection
Storage conditions are critical for performance retention. The tungsten crucible should be kept in a dry, clean, and low-oxygen environment, preferably under vacuum packaging or sealed inert atmosphere to minimize oxidation risk.

Stacking or localized pressure must be avoided to prevent deformation or edge stress damage. Before reuse, visual inspection and low-temperature preheating are required to stabilize material condition and reduce thermal shock sensitivity.

5. Key Parameters for Installation and Maintenance
(1) Operating temperature: 1800–2600°C
(2) Heating rate: 5–10°C/min, step heating recommended
(3) Cooling method: natural cooling or controlled slow cooling

(6) Storage environment: dry, vacuum or inert atmosphere
