Introduction to Standard AWS A5.12M/A5.12:2024 Specification for Tungsten and Oxide Dispersed Tungsten Electrodes for Arc Welding and Cutting
Standard Number: AWS A5.12M/A5.12:2024
Standard Name: Specification for Tungsten and Oxide Dispersed Tungsten Electrodes for Arc Welding and Cutting
Chinese Title: 电弧焊和切割用钨及氧化物弥散钨电极规范
Issuing Organization: American Welding Society (AWS)
Note: AWS A5.12M/A5.12:2024 is a tungsten electrode classification and technical specification standard published by AWS. It serves as one of the key technical references widely adopted in North American and international markets. This summary is compiled by CTIA GROUP based on publicly available information. For the complete and official standard, please obtain it through authorized channels.

1. Scope
This standard applies to tungsten electrodes and oxide dispersed tungsten electrodes used in gas tungsten arc welding, plasma arc welding, and cutting applications.
2. Classification and Identification
The standard classifies electrodes according to the type of oxide additive and specifies a color-coding system. EWP is a pure tungsten electrode with a tungsten content of ≥99.5% and is identified by a green color code. EWTh-1 contains 0.8–1.2% thorium oxide and is identified by yellow. EWTh-2 contains 1.8–2.2% thorium oxide and is identified by red. EWCe-2 contains 1.8–2.2% cerium oxide and is identified by gray. EWLa-1 contains 0.8–1.2% lanthanum oxide and is identified by black. EWLa-1.5 contains 1.3–1.7% lanthanum oxide and is identified by gold. EWLa-2 contains 1.8–2.2% lanthanum oxide and is identified by blue. EWZr-1 contains 0.7–0.9% zirconium oxide and is identified by brown. EWZr-2 contains 1.7–2.2% zirconium oxide and is identified by white. The standard also defines designation rules and tip color-coding requirements to facilitate rapid identification and grade selection.

3. Technical Requirements
3.1 Chemical Composition
The oxide content of each electrode classification shall be controlled within the specified limits, and impurity levels shall be restricted according to the standard requirements.
3.2 Dimensions and Specifications
Common electrode diameters range from 0.5 mm to 6.3 mm. Standard lengths are typically 150 mm and 175 mm, with dimensional tolerances specified according to product size.
3.3 Surface Quality
The electrode surface shall be smooth and uniform, free from cracks, laminations, inclusions, or other significant defects.
3.4 Straightness Requirements
The standard specifies maximum straightness deviation limits to ensure stable performance during automated welding and feeding operations.
3.5 Color Coding
Color markings applied to the electrode tip shall be clear, uniform, and resistant to peeling, enabling rapid identification of electrode classifications.
4. Inspection and Quality Control
The standard specifies methods for chemical composition analysis, dimensional measurement, and visual inspection. Sampling procedures and acceptance criteria are also defined to ensure batch consistency and product traceability.
5. Marking, Packaging, and Delivery
Packaging shall clearly indicate the electrode classification, dimensions, batch number, manufacturer information, and applicable standard designation. Packaging materials shall provide protection against moisture, contamination, and mechanical damage during transportation and storage.
