Tungsten Electrode in Plasma Arc Welding
Tungsten electrode is a non-consumable electrode used in Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), providing continuous electron emission and a stable arc column for high-quality welding of stainless steel, titanium alloys, nickel-based alloys, and other materials. Due to the high energy density and concentrated arc characteristics of plasma arc welding, higher requirements are placed on burn resistance, electron emission performance, and dimensional accuracy than those for conventional TIG welding electrodes.
1. Working Principle of Tungsten Electrodes in Plasma Arc Welding
Tungsten electrode is installed inside the welding torch, serving as a cathode connected to a Direct Current (DC) power source. Upon electrification, tungsten electrode emits a large volume of electrons, forming an electron flow. When this electron flow passes through the constriction nozzle inside the welding torch, it interacts strongly with the plasma gas (such as argon) flowing through the nozzle, ionizing the gas medium to establish a high-temperature, high-energy-density plasma arc. This process elevates the arc temperature up to 10000–30000°C, which is sufficient to achieve deep penetration and stable welding.
