Tungsten Electrode in Plasma Spraying

Tungsten electrode is the core electrode in plasma spray guns, responsible for initiating and maintaining a stable plasma arc in plasma spraying systems. Since the electrode is continuously exposed to high-temperature arc impacts and thermal cycling, it must provide excellent electron emission performance, arc erosion resistance, and high-temperature stability. And rare earth tungsten electrodes have become the mainstream choice for plasma spraying equipment.

1. Working Principle of Tungsten Electrodes in Plasma Spraying
The tungsten electrode serves as the cathode and forms an arc with the nozzle anode inside the plasma spray gun. When the working gas passes through the arc zone, it is rapidly ionized into a high-temperature plasma and expelled through the nozzle at high velocity, forming a plasma jet. Spray powder injected into the plasma stream is heated, melted, and accelerated toward the substrate surface, where it forms a coating. With a melting point of 3422°C, tungsten can maintain structural stability in high-temperature arc environments and continuously provide stable electron emission, ensuring reliable and continuous spraying operations.
