Tungsten Electrode in Electron Beam Welding

Tungsten electrode in Electron Beam Welding (EBW) refers to the critical emission material used in the cathode system of electron beam welding electron guns. Under high-vacuum and high-voltage environments, tungsten electrode acts as an electron emission source to provide stable electron flow, serving as an important foundational component for electron beam formation and energy output. Due to the extremely high requirements for electron stability and thermal load in electron beam welding, high-purity tungsten and tungsten-based cathode materials are typically utilized.

1.Working Principle of Tungsten Electrode in Electron Beam Welding
In high-vacuum and high-voltage environment, the tungsten electrode acts as thermionic emission cathode, providing stable electron source. When heated, the electrode emits electrons through thermionic emission. The emitted electrons are accelerated and focused by high-voltage electric field to form high-energy electron beam, enabling deep-penetration welding of metallic materials. Since the electron beam suffers almost no gas scattering in vacuum, its energy can be highly concentrated and stably transmitted, thereby obtaining high-energy-density beam for precision welding effects.

Tungsten has a melting point above 3410°C and a work function of approximately 4.5 eV. These properties allow it to maintain stable electron emission capability and structural integrity under high temperatures and strong electric fields, supporting continuous operation and reliable energy output in electron beam welding systems.

2.Types and Features of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Electron Beam Welding
Tungsten electrodes for electron beam welding mainly include high-purity tungsten electrodes and tungsten-based cathode materials. Different materials are selected according to electron gun design and beam stability requirements.
(1) Pure Tungsten Electrode (W)
Features a high melting point and excellent high-temperature strength. It is the most commonly used cathode material in electron beam welding systems due to its superior resistance to high-temperature evaporation and structural stability.
(2) Thoriated Tungsten Electrode (WT)
Offers enhanced electron emission capability and a lower work function, providing improved beam ignition performance. It is used in certain traditional and specialized electron gun systems, although its application has declined because of radioactive concerns.
(3) Tungsten-Based Thermionic Cathode (Modified Tungsten)
Improves electron emission stability through densification or surface activation treatments, enhancing beam consistency and service life in high-stability electron beam systems.
(4) High-Purity Tungsten Emitter
Manufactured from high-purity tungsten (≥99.95%) and widely used in modern electron beam welding cathode systems. It provides excellent high-temperature stability and sputtering resistance.
(5) Tungsten Alloy Cathode Materials
Used in specialized electron beam emission systems requiring high load capacity or exceptional stability, improving emission uniformity and erosion resistance.
