Tungsten Electrode in Electrical Discharge Machining

Tungsten electrodes are conductive electrodes used in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for the precision machining of mold steels, tungsten carbides, titanium alloys, superalloys, and other hard-to-machine conductive materials. Electrical discharge machining removes material via non-contact erosion by generating instantaneous high temperatures through pulsed discharges that melt and vaporize localized areas of the workpiece surface. As the discharge carrier, tungsten electrode directly influences machining precision, electrode wear rate, surface roughness, and production efficiency.

1. Working Principle of Tungsten Electrodes in Electrical Discharge Machining
A small discharge gap is maintained between the electrode and the workpiece. Under the action of a pulsed power supply, an instantaneous discharge channel is formed. The discharge zone can reach temperatures of 8000–12000°C, rapidly melting and vaporizing the workpiece material, which is then removed by the dielectric fluid. Tungsten-based electrodes offer high melting points, high strength, and good electrical conductivity, enabling them to maintain dimensional stability during continuous discharges, reduce electrode wear, and improve machining accuracy and profile consistency.
