Tungsten Electrode in Arc Cutting

Tungsten electrodes are non-consumable electrodes used in tungsten arc cutting and related high-temperature arc processing equipment. They are primarily applied for cutting and gouging stainless steel, carbon steel, copper alloys, nickel-based alloys, and other electrically conductive metals. Since arc temperatures exceed 5,000°C, the electrode must provide excellent electron emission capability, high-temperature stability, and arc erosion resistance. Rare-earth tungsten electrodes have therefore become important electrode materials for arc cutting applications.

1.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Arc Cutting
Tungsten electrode establishes a stable arc with the workpiece, with arc temperatures reaching 5000–20000°C. The high-energy arc rapidly melts localized metal on the workpiece, and auxiliary gases such as compressed air or argon blow the molten metal away from the kerf to achieve material cutting. Tungsten has a high melting point of 3422°C, delivering excellent high-temperature strength and electron emission performance, which maintains arc stability and good cutting quality under high-temperature arc environments.

2.Types and Characteristics of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Arc Cutting
CTIA’s tungsten electrodes have the following types and characteristics:
(1) Ceriated tungsten Electrode (WC20)
Excellent arc starting performance and stable arc characteristics at low current, suitable for precision arc cutting applications.
(2) Lanthanated tungsten Electrode (WL10/WL20)
Strong electron emission capability and high current-carrying capacity, making it one of the most widely used electrodes for arc cutting.
(3) Multi-Component Composite Rare Earth Tungsten Electrode
Combines excellent arc starting performance, arc erosion resistance, and long service life, making it suitable for automated continuous cutting systems.

3.Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrodes in Arc Cutting
CTIA’s tungsten electrodes are used in: (1) stainless steel and alloy steel plate cutting; (2) copper and copper alloy cutting and gouging; (3) weld back gouging and defect removal; (4) hole cutting in pipelines and pressure vessels; (5) removal of casting gates and flash; (6) equipment repair and structural modification; (7) on-site cutting of heavy metal structures.
