Tungsten Electrode in TIG Welding

Tungsten electrode in TIG welding refers to the core non-consumable electrode used in Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding. Serving as a cathode under high-temperature arc condition, it provides stable electron emission to maintain the arc stably and deliver concentrated heating.

Tungsten features a high melting point of 3422°C, a work function of approximately 2.5–4.5 eV (varying with different rare earth doping systems), and excellent resistance to high-temperature arc ablation. These properties enable it to maintain a stable operating state in an arc environment exceeding 6000°C. Its recrystallization temperature is approximately 1200–1400°C, ensuring that the electrode retains good structural stability and dimensional retention capability during high current density and long-term welding process, serving as an essential foundational material for achieving high-quality weld formation.

1.Working Principle of Tungsten Electrode in TIG Welding
Tungsten electrode serves as a non-consumable cathode during TIG welding. Under the protection of argon or helium gas, a stable arc is established through high-voltage arc ignition. The arc forms a high-temperature plasma channel between the electrode and the workpiece, with temperatures exceeding 6000°C, enabling localized melting of the base material. The tungsten electrode continuously supplies cathode electrons through its high melting point and stable electron emission capability, ensuring arc stability and precise control of the welding process.

2.Types, Features and Applications of CTIA's Tungsten Electrode in TIG Welding
(1) Pure Tungsten Electrode (WP)
Suitable for AC welding of aluminum and magnesium alloys, demonstrating stable performance under conventional welding conditions, although it requires a relatively higher arc-starting voltage.
(2) Ceriated Tungsten Electrode (WC20)
Suitable for low-current precision welding, offering excellent arc-starting performance within the 5–100 A range and widely used for thin-sheet welding and electronic component fabrication.
(3) Lanthanated Tungsten Electrode (WL20)
Combines excellent AC/DC performance and is widely used in robotic welding and automated production, with a service life approximately 30%–50% longer than that of pure tungsten electrode.
(4) Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode (WZ8)
Maintains a stable balled tip during AC aluminum welding and provides superior contamination resistance, making it suitable for high-current AC welding applications.
(5) Thoriated Tungsten Electrode (WT20)
Features excellent electron emission capability. However, due to radioactivity concerns, it is gradually being replaced by lanthanated tungsten electrode and ceriated tungsten electrode in many applications.
(6) Yttriated Tungsten Electrode (WY20)
Provides stronger arc constriction under high-current-density conditions and is suitable for advanced welding applications and aerospace manufacturing.

3.How to Select CTIA's Tungsten Electrode in TIG Welding?
(1) For AC welding applications, pure tungsten electrode or zirconiated tungsten electrode is recommended for aluminum, magnesium, and their alloys.
(2) For DC welding applications, ceriated tungsten electrode or lanthanated tungsten electrode is recommended for carbon steel, stainless steel, and titanium alloys.
(3) For low-current precision welding, ceriated tungsten electrode is preferred.
(4) For high-current or automated welding applications, lanthanated tungsten electrode or yttriated tungsten electrode is recommended to achieve greater arc stability and longer service life.

4.Applications of CTIA's Tungsten Electrode in TIG Welding
CTIA's tungsten electrode is widely used in: (1) Welding of carbon steel and stainless steel structural components; (2) Pipeline construction and general manufacturing assembly welding; (3) Welding of automotive components and machined parts; (4) Fabrication of pressure vessels and pressure-bearing equipment; (5) Electronic packaging and precision thin-sheet welding; (6) High-precision critical welding applications in aerospace and advanced equipment manufacturing.
