Tungsten Electrode in Discharge Lamps

Tungsten electrodes are critical cathode materials used in discharge lamps such as High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps, and are widely applied in stage lighting, film and television lighting, cinema projection light sources, and high-brightness professional lighting systems. Their primary function is to provide stable electron emission under high-voltage excitation, enabling continuous gas discharge and intense light output. As a result, tungsten electrodes directly influence lamp ignition performance, brightness stability, and service life.

The mainstream tungsten electrode for discharge lamps utilizes a barium-tungsten (Ba-W) emission system. Using high-purity tungsten powder as the base material, the barium-tungsten electrode is processed via powder metallurgy to create a tungsten skeleton with interconnected pore structures. Active barium compounds are then introduced into the internal matrix through vacuum impregnation, forming a stable, low-work-function emission layer on the electrode surface after high-temperature activation to significantly enhance electron emission efficiency.

Barium tungsten electrodes provide stable current output capability. The emission current density is typically 1–10 A/cm² and can exceed 20 A/cm² under pulse-start conditions, meeting the requirements of frequent switching and high-brightness output in stage and professional lighting applications. The internal porosity is generally controlled at 20–30%, which helps ensure uniform distribution and continuous replenishment of active barium materials, maintaining stable performance during long-term operation.

Tungsten electrodes feature rapid ignition, stable light output, excellent thermal shock resistance, and long service life, making them indispensable core materials in modern high-end HID lighting systems.

Tungsten electrodes for discharge lamps are available in diameters from 0.5 mm up to 10.0 mm, with ball-tip, conical, and flat tip designs available for different arc shapes and lighting characteristics. They are commonly used in 2–10 kW HID lighting systems for stage performances, film production, and large-scale entertainment lighting.

With more than 30 years of manufacturing experience, CTIA GROUP supplies barium tungsten electrodes in multiple specifications and supports customization of diameter, pore structure, and tip geometry for various HID high-intensity discharge lighting applications.
