What's TIG Welding Tungsten Electrode?

1.What's TIG Welding Tungsten Electrode?
TIG welding tungsten electrode refers to a non-consumable electrode used in Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW). It is mainly made of high-purity tungsten combined with trace rare-earth oxides such as La₂O₃, CeO₂, and Y₂O₃ through powder metallurgy and high-temperature sintering processes.

During welding, the tungsten electrode acts as an electron emitter. Under arc excitation, it generates a high-temperature plasma arc, enabling localized melting of the base material and forming a weld joint.

2.Principle of TIG Welding and Role of Tungsten Electrode
TIG welding is an arc welding process that uses inert gas (mainly argon, Ar) to protect the welding zone. During welding, a stable arc is formed between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece. The arc generates high-temperature energy in a plasma state, melting the base metal locally and forming a weld seam. Argon shielding gas forms a protective layer over the weld zone, effectively isolating oxygen and nitrogen from the air and preventing oxidation and contamination defects.

As a non-consumable electrode, tungsten electrode does not melt during welding. It only serves as an electron emitter and arc carrier. Its high melting point (about 3422°C) and excellent thermal erosion resistance ensure arc stability and concentration, significantly improving welding quality and process control.
