Tungsten Electrode in X-Ray Tubes

Tungsten electrodes are critical electron-emitting materials used in X-ray tubes for industrial non-destructive testing, security inspection, medical imaging, and scientific analytical equipment. In high-vacuum environments, tungsten electrodes serve as cathode electron sources that continuously emit electrons. These electrons are accelerated by high-voltage electric fields and strike anode targets to generate X-rays. Therefore, electron emission capability, thermal stability, and service life directly affect image quality and operational reliability. Modern industrial X-ray tubes primarily use barium tungsten (Ba-W) cathode to achieve higher electron emission efficiency and longer operating life.

1. Working Principle of Tungsten Electrodes in X-Ray Tubes
In high-vacuum environments, barium tungsten cathodes are heated to approximately 1000–1150°C to generate thermionic electron emission. Active barium layers reduce cathode work function to approximately 1.6–2.0 eV, significantly improving electron emission efficiency. Emitted electrons are accelerated by high-voltage electric fields ranging from 40 to 300 kV and bombard anode targets, converting part of their kinetic energy into X-rays for inspection and imaging applications. For pulsed X-ray tubes, control grids regulate electron beam emission, enabling pulsed operation and high-dose-rate imaging.
