Tungsten Electrode in Plasma Cutting

Tungsten electrode is the core cathode used in plasma cutting systems. It provides stable electron emission and arc-column maintenance during gas ionization, enabling efficient penetration and precision cutting of metal materials.

1. How Do Tungsten Electrodes Work in Plasma Cutting?
Tungsten electrode acts as the cathode under Direct Current (DC) power. Through thermionic emission, it generates a high-density electron flow that interacts with high-velocity compressed gases, such as nitrogen and argon, to produce a high-temperature plasma arc. Arc temperature can exceed 20,000°C, concentrating energy in a small area to rapidly melt metal, which is then removed by the gas stream to form a cut.

2. What Types of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrode Are Available for Plasma Cutting and What Are Their Characteristics?
(1) Pure Tungsten Electrode
Relatively low electron emission capability and difficult arc starting. Rarely used in plasma cutting except for applications with minimal performance requirements.
(2) Ceriated Tungsten Electrode
Sensitive arc starting performance, suitable for thin-sheet cutting (≤3 mm) and low-current plasma cutting (≤60 A). Ideal for small-batch and multi-variety production.
(3) Lanthanated Tungsten Electrode
Balanced overall performance and non-radioactive. Suitable for automated cutting systems and medium- to high-current plasma cutting (60-200 A). Currently the mainstream choice.
(4) Thoriated Tungsten Electrode
Strong electron emission capability and long service life. Suitable for continuous high-load plasma cutting (≥200 A). Due to radioactivity concerns, it is gradually being replaced by lanthanated tungsten electrodes and yttriated tungsten electrodes in regions with strict environmental regulations.
(5) Yttriated Tungsten Electrode
Excellent arc constriction characteristics. Suitable for high-current-density plasma cutting (≥200 A) and high-precision applications such as micro-plasma cutting and aerospace material processing.

3. Applications of CTIA’s Tungsten Electrode in Plasma Cutting
CTIA’s tungsten electrode, serving as the cathode for plasma arc cutting, is primarily used for: (1) carbon steel and stainless steel plate high-speed cutting processing; (2) aluminum alloy and copper alloy structural component cutting processing; (3) shipbuilding and heavy steel structure blanking; (4) construction machinery and pressure vessel manufacturing cutting; (5) automated production line and robotic cutting system.
